Highly commended for staff welfare: Legian Beach Hotel, Bali
Our 'hotel of the month' competition provides a way for accommodation providers who have achieved excellence in sustainability to be recognised for their work. Our theme in December is staff welfare and the 2021 winner was Tiger Mountain Pokhara Lodge due to the efforts they make to support the wellbeing of their staff in Nepal. However, we were also extremely impressed with the work Legian Beach Hotel has done in Bali to help staff through the pandemic.
With almost 80% of the Bali economy relying on tourism, the pandemic hit this beautiful Indonesian island especially hard, resulting in wide-spread layoffs in the tourism sector as visitors to the region virtually dried-up overnight. Realising the strain this would put their staff under, Legian Beach Hotel worked quickly to find win-win solutions to support staff wherever they could through the pandemic. Discussions were held with employees and their union, and a solution was reached that would keep employees on payroll , even though this has meant running at a loss for the past 19-months. In addition to keeping the hotel open, this extended quiet period enabled the property to focus on staff training and to work with staff to find ways for improving the guest experience.
Due to a small number of employees deciding to leave to start their own businesses, Legian Beach Hotel has had an opportunity to restructure operations, resulting in two promotions for existing staff and the recruitment of three new staff, no easy feat during such difficult times!
